Instead of a plain front lawn, the owner (an architect) wanted something that was more visually dynamic and lower maintenance. The rear pool area was also in disarray, with overgrown junipers, a pool deck in need of repair, and several unused spaces. The final design replaced the lawn with foliage plants and blooming perennials, with a harmonizing color palette that catches the eye in all seasons. An Arizona rose flagstone pathway weaves throughout the front yard. The pool deck was resurfaced with the same flagstone, and a grey flagstone path leads one across ther deck to other key areas, such as the Ghost Garden. The Ghost Garden, a hitherto-unused and walled area behind the garage, was created as a private retreat; only plants with grey, silver, and white foliage were used, and a small bench installed. The entire landscape was finished off with subtle low-voltage lighting accents.
