“Best New Landscaping” Award
City of Claremont Architectural Commission (2004)
After years of overgrowth, difficult-to-maintain plantings, and an irrigation system in degrees of disrepair, the City of Claremont decided to renovate this 1/2 mile section of one of the city's busiest thoroughfares. This concept, "Southern California Transsect", echoed the layout of southern California, from low foothills (wildflowers and perennials in front) to mountains (large shrubs in elevated areas). The concept also revolved around sustainable landscape principles and year-round interest, emphasizing native shrubs and wildflowers (Ceanothus, Howard McMinn manzanita, tidytips, California poppies) and other adapted low-water plants used for additional interest. Drip irrigation was used throughout the shrubs and perennial areas, with the hydroseeded wildflowers irrigated by spray systems. Throughout the year, passers-by can be seen stopping to take photos with the blooming landscape.
