The new design for the streetscape and parking areas was intended to echo the use of water through color, while using water-conserving plant species. The biggest challenge was finding plants that would survive under the existing mature eucalyptus trees, yet maintain the design concept. The final planting design used blue-purple Scaevola, blue-and-grey germander sage (Salvia chamaedryoides), and blue hibiscus (Alyogyne huegellii) at accent points and around the main monument sign; contrasting warm-colored lantana (Lantana ‘Tangerine’), yarrow (Achillea ‘Paprika’), and dwarf heavenly bamboo (Nandina ‘Harbor Dwarf’), along with a few other interesting species, completed the picture.
